Prepping for ordinary people
Ordinary Prepper is a research desk for regular households: the food in the pantry, the water in the garage, the battery that keeps the fridge cold, and the house that stays livable when the grid goes down. No bunkers, no doom — just scored comparisons built from specs, verified prices, and what owners actually report.
New here? Start with a plan, not a shopping cart
Most readiness advice starts with a product. It should start with four questions: what will we eat, what will we drink, what keeps the lights and the fridge on, and how do we stay warm and cook? Our launch guide walks through one month of evenings-and-weekends steps, in order, with the cheap weeks first.
Getting started: your first month of readiness
Four weeks, four jobs: water and light, a pantry that works, a power plan for the fridge, and the home basics — heat, cooking, documents, and cash.

Calculators that do the math for you
How much food for four people for 90 days? How many gallons of water, and where do they fit? How big a battery keeps a fridge running overnight? The tools below answer in pounds, gallons, and watt-hours.

The four shelves
Everything on this site lives on one of four shelves — the same four on our badge. Comparisons are scored out of 100 on evidence, cost, owner experience, and fit for an ordinary home. How we rate explains the scoring before the first score ever appears — that’s deliberate.
Food
The deep pantry, freeze-dried meals, buckets and bulk staples, and the garden that tops it up.
Water
Storage containers and barrels, home filtration, and rain collection — sized for a house, not a backpack.
Power
Solar generators and battery backup for the fridge, the lights, and the medical device in the spare room.
Home
Heat, light, and cooking when the grid is down — plus the garden and preserving that keep a house fed.
How this site works
We are a research desk, not a test lab. Nobody here unboxes forty water filters on a workbench. Every comparison is built from manufacturer specifications, prices we verify the day we write, and patterns counted across large samples of verified-owner feedback — the recurring complaint that shows up in 300 reviews matters more than any single five-star rave. When a comparison is based on thin evidence, the score says so.
Comparisons begin shortly, one shelf at a time, starting with backup power for the home. Until then, the guide and the calculators are the useful places to be.
